tuareg_group Tuareg Pendants
Deftly hand-crafted by the nomadic Tuareg people in gleaming silver, the "pure metal blessed by the Prophet". Incorporated are elements of Islamic art with animist symbols of West Africa, and to a lesser extent talismanic associations of Christianity. The designs are clean-cut and geometric, echoing the proud austerity of existence in a hostile land. Many are specific to a particular oasis and incorporate protective symbolism. They are frequently used for barter. Our source of pendants is the Ullimeden tribe, where they are called "tchatchat" and commonly worn by women and girls. The shapes mimic Saharan clay dolls, symbols of fertility. Priced according to shape, left to right. Sold individually. Round $180.00, Triangular $180.00, Tear Drop $245.00, and, Silver with Amber: $395.00
